The Ohio State Scoreboard Animations Staff began as a group of computer science students led by their professor back in 1984 when Ohio Stadium got its first black and white matrix board. Back then, graphics programs were rare and expensive so the students had to write their own programs to create visual effects and to display text messages. As time passed, and graphics programs became readily available to the public, the trend shifted from programmers to artists and designers who used the existing programs to create original characters and animations.
Currently, there are 13 staff members creating all the messages, statistic displays, and crazy cartoons that grace the scoreboards of Ohio Stadium, the Jerome Schottenstein Center, St. John Arena, and Bill Davis Stadium. Of the current members, the majority are currently art and design students or have graduated with an art related degree. Some other majors/current majors have included Art Education, Journalism/Communications, Philosophy, Linguistics, Biochemistry and Computer Science.
